Christina learning how to trim and rasp hooves
More than one area professional farrier has told us that we have quite a shortage of professional farriers in our area. So, we are learning to do some of it ourselves. Christina is rasping Spirit every 7-10 days, trying to get rid of the cracks in his hooves that may be caused from his hooves "flaring."
Doesn't look too stressful for Spirit, does it!

of course, back hooves too!

Help the Horses of DoubleHP celebrate their Sioux Falls Chamber Ribbon Cutting!
You are invited! Please just let us know if you are coming, so we can add some more fruit and veggies to the goodie trays! email us at doublehphorses@alliancecom.net
thanks for the story Southside Living & Crown Pointe Neighbors Magazines
here's the story that ran in these beautiful magazines this month. They included some beautiful photos of some of our rescued horses too. Thanks thanks thanks!!!
The Horses
of DoubleHP:
They can
show you how to develop or improve your skills in business communications,
teamwork, and leadership.
They can
help you figure things out about yourself, relationships, and life.
And of
course, they can teach you about all things horsey, including how to ride.
They are the
Horses of DoubleHP; and they are available for business/group workshops, counseling
and psychotherapy sessions, and natural horsemanship programs.
The Horses
of DoubleHP are special horses; they were rescued by Volunteers of Horse Help
Providers, Inc. (DoubleHP), a 501c3 nonprofit organization with headquarters
near Crooks, SD (25337 470th Avenue), just 20 minutes from Sioux
Falls. DoubleHP Volunteers have helped to rescue, rehab and rehome hundreds of
horses during the last 14 years; and 14 of these horses have been promised a
forever home at DoubleHP’s sanctuary and learning center near Crooks. These are
the Horses of DoubleHP. Most of them were rescued from severe starvation when
they were very young, some only a few months old, in cases where law
enforcement was involved. Many of these horses saw friends and family members freeze
and starve to death before help arrived. But these horses, the Horses of
DoubleHP, are survivors. They have an amazing ability to forgive; and they can
teach us a lot about life, if we let them.
Equine-assisted
learning workshops for businesses and organizations are designed according to
group size, schedule, and goals. For equine-assisted counseling and
psychotherapy sessions, the Horses of DoubleHP and their Manager, Darci
Hortness, team up with Carissa Palmberg, MS, LPC, LAC, of Carissa Palmberg
Counseling. Both Hortness (Equine Specialist) and Palmberg (Mental Health
Professional) are certified through EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning
Association). In these sessions, participants interact with the horses in
on-the-ground activities; there is no riding.
But of
course there IS riding going on at DoubleHP -- in their horsemanship program,
which is strongly influenced by Parelli Natural Horsemanship and includes a
mixture of riding and non-riding activities. “Everything we do before we get on
the horse relates to what we do when we ride,” explains Hortness. “If you can develop
good rhythm and harmony with horses in non-riding activities, you will have a
better chance of success in the saddle,” says Hortness. But people don’t have
to ride if they don’t want to; they can still enjoy a horse relationship and
fun physical exercise in non-riding horse activities. DoubleHP’s horsemanship
participants fall into three main categories: individuals or families who are thinking about
becoming new horse owners, current horse owners who are having some issues or
just want to learn more, and former horse owners who are currently without a
horse for whatever reason.
Hortness is
often asked about the cost of horse ownership. “It’s expensive; you need to
plan on thousands of dollars each year to properly care for a horse,” she says.
“At DoubleHP, you can kind of share that expense, you can help to sponsor a
rescued horse, learn how to care for horses, learn how to be safe, happy and
successful with horses, and just try it out before you actually go out and buy
a horse, protecting yourself from a lot of unnecessary stress and mistakes,”
says Hortness.
DoubleHP was
awarded sanctuary status from Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) in
2012, and is South Dakota’s first and only GFAS sanctuary. DoubleHP is also a
proud new member of the Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, and a ribbon
cutting is scheduled at DoubleHP for Tuesday June 30 at 4:30 p.m. The Horses of
DoubleHP extend an invitation to everyone to attend. They will be offering free
horsemanship sessions and business workshops that day, by advance appointment.
“No previous horse experience is required. The Horses will show you everything
you need to know. About Life.” If you would like to get on the schedule for
June 30 or to start any DoubleHP program, please call Darci at 359-0961. For
more information about DoubleHP’s programs, visit their website www.newhopehorses.org or www.facebook.com/newhopehorses.

Art by Eric Atkisson and Thomas R Voorhis, donated for our event tomorrow
this is the one that Angela's friend Eric did for us. He brought it to us today. It is beautiful. This artist is Eric Atkisson. he has a website at atkissonart.com and has a studio in Sioux Falls at Exposure Gallery & Studios. His email is artbyatkisson@gmail.com and he's having an art show May 1, 5-10 p.m. at Monks, downtown Sioux Falls, during the Art and Wine Walk. This will be a silent aucition item tomorrow too. Eric used a photo he found on our fb page for this. It's called "Serenity and Spirit."
so, we're setting up for the rummage sale today and a neighbor comes over and donates some awesome stuff! including these 2 pieces of art. I looked up the artist, Thomas R Voorhis, he died in January of this year out in the Black Hills. these look to be originals but I am not an expert. there is a website in his memory, he has a lot of quotes about humility. "humility" was one of his favorite words and things. Here are the words that are on the one drawing: "O Great Spirit, ...Whose voice I hear in the winds and whose breath gives life to all the world, hear me. I come before you, one of your many children. I am small and weak. I need your strength and wisdom. let me walk in beauty and my eyes behold the red and purple sunset. make my hands respect the things you have made, my ears sharp to hear your voice. Make me wise so that I may know the things you have taught my people, the lesson you have hidden in every leaf and rock. I seek strength not to be superior to my brothers, but to be able to fight my greatest enemy -- myself. Make me ever ready to come to you with clean hands and straight eyes. So when life fades as a fading sunset, my spirit may come to you without shame." Do you think the artist wrote that too? anyone recognize it? sure is beautiful. On the drawing with the 4 faces the names Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, Chief Joseph, and Many Horns and the date 79. Anyway, we're going to have these at silent auction tomorrow at our Rummage sale event. bidding ends at 3 p.m. Call if you have any questions or knowledge of these items. thanks. Darci. 605 359-0961
This is where you can find these beautiful art pieces for sale tomorrow. Silent auction. bidding ends at 3 p.m.

DoubleHP Celebrates ASPCA Help A
Horse Day on April 26th
Community support needed for chance to win $10,000 ASPCA grant and
save more horses
Community support needed for chance to win $10,000 ASPCA grant and
save more horses
CROOKS, SD (April 20, 2015) — DoubleHP will be celebrating the ASPCA® (The
American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) national Help A
Horse Day on April 26 and competing for a chance to win up to $10,000 in grant
prizes to assist with their efforts in equine welfare. To celebrate the event,
DoubleHP has a Kingswood Rummage Sale on Saturday April 25 at 1609 S. Deerberry
Trail in Sioux Falls, and a “Barn Dance” on Sunday April 26 at DoubleHP Horse
Sanctuary & Learning Center, 25337 470 Ave (about 3 miles north of Crooks).
This
nationwide competition is for equine rescues and sanctuaries to raise awareness
about the lifesaving work they do year-round to care for at-risk horses in
their community who have often been abused or neglected. Horses have been
central to the ASPCA’s work since its founding 149 years ago, when Henry Bergh
stopped a cart driver from beating his horse, resulting in the first successful
arrest for the mistreatment of a horse on April 26, 1866.
“Sunday’s
Barn Dance at DoubleHP WILL include some dancing. Dancing with horses. Horses
have a natural sense of rhythm, balance and harmony, so whenever we are
involved in horse activities, riding or non-riding, it is a bit like a
beautiful dance,” said Darci Hortness, DoubleHP’s Founder/President.
The ASPCA Help
A Horse Day contest is a wonderful opportunity for our team to welcome Sioux
Falls area residents and businesses into our barn to help spread awareness about
responsible horse ownership. Most of the horses we have rescued from starvation
were rescued when they were babies, products of irresponsible breeding and
neglectful ownership. Most of the horses that we rescue are also untrained.
Some have never been touched before, let alone ridden. Horses that have been
trained properly can almost always find a good, new home. Horses without
training are difficult to place. Training has always been a priority for our
rescue horses. And we have a program at our learning center which will help
other people learn how to train their horses as well. So many times, young
horses get labeled as “dangerous” just because their owners don’t know how to
train or handle them. Through our horsemanship program, we can help people
learn how to be safe, happy, and successful with their horses. And they will be
learning from the best teachers in the world – The Horses of DoubleHP. You can
send your horse to a trainer, but if you don’t involve yourself in that
training, how will you know what to do with your horse when you bring him back
home? Our program is designed so that people can learn good horsemanship skills
and habits at our facility, and then take what they learn from us and apply it
to their horses at home. We have had many participants come here to learn, even
though they already own horses. We have also had many people come here to learn
before they go out and buy a horse. Other people come here because they know
they won’t be able to afford their own horse for a long, long time. So they
come here and share one of our rescued horses and learn about horses for as
many months or years as they want to. So many nice young horses fall through
the cracks, get labeled as “dangerous,” and end up on the slaughter truck, just
because their humans don’t have the time, money, or skills to properly train
them. Usually, when a horse-related accident occurs, it is a human error.
Usually just one little thing a human could have done differently, and then there
wouldn’t have been an accident at all. It might be something as simple as
learning how to put a halter on or learning how to ask a horse to slow down or
stop when it gets a little worried about something. These are things you can
learn when you come to our Barn Dance on Sunday. Oh, and you can learn how to
NOT get your toes stepped on too! Horses
are majestic, loving animals, and we hope our local supporters will come out on
April 26 to help us win a $10,000 grant so we can continue our lifesaving efforts
for years to come.”
Horse Help
Providers, Inc., has been a 501c3 nonprofit for more than 10 years. It is South
Dakota’s first and only GFAS approved Sanctuary and, in addition to offering
education through a horsemanship program, has EAGALA certified facilitators
available for equine-assisted counseling, learning, and psychotherapy.
Sunday’s Barn
Dance is free to attend, and there will be door prizes. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5
p.m. For more information about the event and about DoubleHP, please visit www.newhopehorses.org or call Darci at
359-0961.

More details about our "Barn Dance" activities April 26
Our "Barn Dance" on Sunday, April 26, is all about the natural sense of balance, rhythm, and harmony that Horses have. And how we can learn about that from the horses and add some of it to our own lives. These times are approximate:
From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. two of our DoubleHP PT chore helper youth employees are volunteering some of their time to help us demonstrate some important horsemanship skills. Brooke and Tiffany, along with a few of our sanctuary horses, will help us with some important riding and non-riding skills that all young horse owners and their parents should know.
Also during this time, we hope to have enough time to show you how Flicka dances with her rider even with no reins!
From 12:30 to 2 p.m. two of our volunteers / horsemanship participants will explain their upcoming official Parelli Level 2 audition videos. One is riding, the other non-riding. Angela with Rocky, and Christina with Spirit will demonstrate their video plans. This may even be their official video time! They are both so close to being ready, perhaps this will be the day!
Also during this time we will let Lovely Lily show you how she dances with her big green ball.

Carissa will explain EAGALA, you will be able to ask her questions, and then we'll have some EAGALA group session demos. so you can see how it actually works. The Horses of DoubleHP are a part of the professional EAGALA team here, and several of them will be involved in this activity.

Equine Assisted Counseling / Learning / Therapy. Women's Group starting in May
Please contact Carissa Palmberg Counseling for more information or to get signed up.
Her number is 308 830-0247.
Or you can call Darci at DoubleHP 605 359-0961.
EAGALA certified facilitators Carissa Palmberg, MS, LPC, LAC; and Equine Specialist Darci Hortness; along with the Horses of DoubleHP, are forming a Women's group starting in May. Tuesdays with the Horses. Counseling, Connecting, Communicating -- in a non-traditional therapy setting -- with The Horses.
Please contact Carissa for details.
Here is what she is thinking: Each woman will have an individual session, cost $120. After that, each woman participant may attend as many of the 12 group sessions as she wants to. Depending on the number of sessions, the cost is somewhere around $30-$50 per group session. As long as 6 or more group sessions are attended, the cost is $30 per session.
Also, new members may enroll at any time.
So if you are just hearing about this and there are only a few sessions left, you can still join!
We also don't have a firm time set for the group sessions. What time works best for you? We could form more than one group if we have enough members for 2 different time slots.
Yes! The Horses get paid for their work. I'm sure they will buy hay and grain with their paycheck. Darci volunteers her time to co-facilitate.
